CA DRAGONBOAT

Dragonboat is a water sport that is spreading like wildfire with each passing year! With origins in China , the sport is a combination of myth, athletics, and ancient tradition fused into a 40-foot long boat with a dragon head at the front and tail at the back. The boats are manned by a team of 22 members (20 paddlers that pull the boat forward, a drummer to set the rate of paddling, and a steersperson), and can travel up to 20 mph depending on the stroke rate and skill of the team. Races are held all over the world in locations such as Taiwan , Hong Kong , Vancouver , Europe , the US East Coast, and even in California in the Long Beach and San Francisco races. The races are primarily during the summer, and have helped to introduce the Chinese culture to many more people.

THE TEAM

UCI’s Chinese Association (CAUCI) started the campus’s first Dragonboat team in late 2003. Currently there are approximately ~113 members signed up for the team, and ~53 actively paddling. While only two years old the team has already proven itself worthy on the water in Northern California's CDBA Regional Dragon Boat Regatta in Redwood City and most recently the 2005 Long Beach High School & College Dragon Boat Tournament. We accept paddlers of both sexes with competitive and recreational interest. Race events take place anywhere from Vancouver, Las Vegas, Nor Cal, So Cal, and even China!
